Celebrating Rescue Dogs

May 15, 2022
There’s a pretty special doggy holiday coming up. May 20th is Rescue Dog Day! While we don’t think you need a reason to celebrate or want to help rescue dogs, this does offer a perfect chance to sing their praises, and maybe help spread the word about pups that need help or are looking for loving homes. A Washington DC vet offers some advice on celebrating rescue dogs in this article.

Famous Rescue Dogs

Some of the most famous dogs ever were rescues. That list includes Benji and Old Yeller, who were both rescued from animal shelters before becoming canine celebrities. Rin Tin Tin was found in a bombed-out shelter in France with his mother and littermates after World War 2. The beloved Toto, from Wizard of Oz, was also a rescue, as were Sandy from the movie Annie and Marley from the tearjerker Marley and Me.

Pampering Fido

Do you have a rescue dog of your own? Get Fido’s cute tail going by getting him a new toy or a special treat. Weather permitting, a trip to a park or swimming spot would also not be inappropriate for dogs that like being out and about. You may also just want to take time to snap some cute pictures of your furry buddy, and share them on social media.

Spreading The Word

Rescue dogs definitely need lots of love and attention, and this unofficial pet holiday can help get them both. One thing you can do to both celebrate these sweet dogs and help them out would be to share posts about local pups that are available for adoption. Lots of folks insist that rescued dogs are the best pups ever, and we aren’t going to argue!

Adopting

Of course, the best thing you can do to honor rescue dogs would be to adopt one. This is of course a huge commitment, so it’s not something you want to take lightly. That said, you may find it a very profound and beautiful experience to help a shy, scared pooch come out of his shell and really blossom as a beloved pet. Rescue dogs tend to find very special places in their humans’ hearts. Many people find that their rescued dogs actually rescue them. As they say, love conquers all!
