Celebrating DOGust

August 1, 2020

August 1 st is a pretty important day for our canine patients: it’s DOGust, the universal birthday for shelter dogs. If you adopted your pet from a shelter, you definitely have our support. We love to see dogs getting second chances! However, you probably don’t know exactly when Fido was born. Why not let your furry best friend join in the fun, and celebrate his birthday today? A Burlington, ON vet offers a few suggestions in this article.

Photos

Take some adorable photos of your four-legged friend. You may want to experiment with different apps and settings. Here are a few tips: try snapping pics from Fido’s eye level. This alone can make a huge difference! We also recommend using quick shutter speeds.

Treats

If you could ask Fido what he wanted for his birthday, we’re pretty sure that treats would be at the top of his list. Indulge your four-legged buddy with something extra yummy! While we don’t usually advocate giving your pooch a lot of fatty foods, you can give your pup something special, like a sausage, hot dog, plain burger, or even a boneless steak!

Cake

We always love seeing cute pics of dogs celebrating their birthdays. Why not make Fido a yummy cake? You’ll find some great recipes for pupcakes online. Just be sure to only use ingredients that are safe for your furry pal.

Toys

No doggy birthday celebration is complete without some fun new toys! You can go with something classic, like a rope toy or tennis ball. Or, opt for a more modern plaything, like an automated ball launcher.

New Digs

This is a great time to take a look at your canine buddy’s belongings, and see if anything needs an upgrade. Could Fido use a new bed? Are his dishes or leashes worn out? Hit the pet store!

Quality Time

Our canine companions are extremely loyal, and really just want to hang out with their humans. Spend some quality time with your four-legged friend. Indulge Fido in a long walk or play session, or just relax with him.

Donations

Don’t forget about all the homeless dogs that are still in shelters. Consider donating money or supplies to a local shelter. When it comes to helping our animal friends, every little bit helps!
