Great Resolutions For Pet Parents

January 1, 2023

Happy New Year! Are you making resolutions this year? This is always a great time to reset and focus on personal goals. Why not include your dog or cat in your resolutions? A Washington, DC vet suggests a few  good ones below.

Finish Training

Did you know that January is also Train Your Dog Month? If Fido already has basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Heel, then move on to advanced training. Or, just show your pooch some fun or useful tricks!

Keep Learning

Even if you’ve had animal companions all your life, there’s always something more to learn about Fido and Fluffy and their habits, body language, and behavior. Take time to do some reading on your furry buddy and their needs. Breed-specific research can be particularly helpful, especially with dogs.

Provide Small Luxuries

Sometimes the little comforts really make a big difference. Pamper your dog or cat by offering things like comfy beds, window seats, and fun toys. Pet ramps are great for small dogs and seniors, while a mechanical ball launcher may be more fun for a puppy. Fido may also enjoy a doghouse. As for Fluffy, she’ll appreciate things like cat towers, catnip, and window seats.

Revisit Diet

Proper nutrition is crucial to your pet’s health and well-being. If you haven’t revisited your furry pal’s diet in a while, this may be a good time to do it. Fido and Fluffy’s needs do change over time!

Take Time To Play

Playing not only helps keep pets active and fit, it’s also good for them mentally and emotionally. The stimulation and exercise they get can also help with any behavioral issues. Make playtime part of your regular daily routine!

Keep It Positive

Fido and Fluffy are wonderful companions, but they aren’t perfect. Sooner or later, they will do something naughty, whether it’s scratching your sofa or chewing up your shoes. Don’t punish your furry friend for misbehaving: that may cause them to feel anxious or frightened. Focus on rewarding good behavior.

Enjoy Your Time

Our animal companions really do add a lot to our lives. They stand beside us when we are struggling, and just offer love, comfort, entertainment, and support on bad days. Pay lots of attention to your four-legged friend this year!
